Q: Air play shows up but doesn't play.

I have a netgear adsl modem and I have  extended my existing network with the new AirPort Extreme base station.. I've hard wired the apple to the net gear and it connects and wireless works great. Air play works fine on IOS devices. However in iTunes on my PC the wireless speaker shows up and it seemingly connects but doesn't play. Any suggestions?

Just to make sure I understand how you extended the Netgear with the new AirPort Extreme what is your setting for Network Mode on the Wireless tab? Is it "Extend a wireless network" or "Create a wireless network" in the AirPort Utility?

I created a new network. In retrospect I believe I should have chosen extend a network. However I think the best move might be to bridge the modem entirely and let the Airport Base Station be the main wireless hub.

My original plans were to use the Airport Extreme wireless to reach my outdoor wireless speakers. I set everything up in the house and it worked and sounded GRREAT!  But alas when doing the actual installation, outdoors the distance is too great. The signal drops below 2 bars.

I plan on keeping my Airport Extreme but adding netgear NETGEAR Powerline Nano 500 adapters and pushing the internet out thru existing wiring to an Airport Express located at the speakers.

If I extend the network rather than creating a new network will that resolve the AirPlay Issue?

Will things work better if I bridge the modem?

Will the powerline adapters (500mb) adequately push a music stream thru airport express?

    Thanks for your help

For best overall bandwidth performance you will want to go with a roaming network configuration. This is where each of the routers would be connected by Ethernet and each would broadcast its own wireless network but use the same network name and security password. This, in essence, would extend the overall wireless network and allow you to literally roam with a laptop and still be on the "same" network. The Ethernet connections can either be done with wire or with the use of Powerline adapters like you have done.

When using wire between routers is not practical or desireable, that is when you would use the "extend" feature of the AirPorts. To provide adequate bandwidth it is critical to properly place the extending base stations. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.

However, I would recommend staying with your current configuration. Please also check out this Apple Support article to get a better understanding of roaming networks.

Ok, everything installed fairly well and I had no problems setting up the network from my IOS device. As described in the article the same password works for both extreme and express devices. But my original problem still exists. On my PC, where iTunes resides, you can see the wireless speaker. When you select wireless speaker, it shows it connected, but it doesn't play. I'm thinking maybe I should have run the airport setup from my PC instead of from my IOS device.

    Any thoughts?

    Here's my network diagram

It really doesn't matter where you ran the AirPort setup. It should work from either the PC or the iOS device.

I am assuming that your wireless speaker is AirPlay-Ready ... correct?

In your diagram is the connection between the Netgear and the Extreme via Ethernet? ... and the connection between the Extreme and the Express was via Powerline adapters ... correct?

Yes all connections are via Ethernet   Speaker is AirPlay and WILL work

When playing music or pandora directly from IPhone or iPad. For some

Reason iTunes just won't play to it. As I stated in iTunes under the airplay

Switch you can see the wireless speaker.

Sorry, but at this point I can't explain why you can't get AirPlay to work from the PC. According to your diagram you have a complete Ethernet circuit between the PC and the AirPort Express.

I only have a few other suggestions:

    • Be sure to (temporarily) disable any software firewall on the PC.
    • If not currently enabled, enable IPv6 on your PC's Ethernet interface.
    • Try (temporarily) relocating the PC to connect it directly to the Extreme. (Note: If your Express is a 2nd generation 802.11n model, try connecting the PC to it instead.)

ive still not made any progress. I have connected my PC directly to the airport extreme. Here is the new configuration. Itunes can still see all the devices in airplay. I did notice that the airport admin utility on my pc does not recognize the airport extreme. It is version 4.2. I tried other and put in the IP address and it says the device is not supported. So i downloaded the 5.6.1 when i ran that it came back and said a later version was installed and it cancelled installation. My PC is has vista w/IPv6 enabled and the airport is 802.11.ac. I

Unfortunately, you will need 5.6.1 to administer the 802.11ac base station. However, 5.6.1 has a minimum requirement of Windows 7.

In order to administer the new 802.11ac AirPort, you will need one of the following:

    • A Mac running OS X 10.7.5+
    • A PC running Windows 7
    • An iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad) running iOS v6.x

Uunfortunately none of that addresses my original problem. I installed all the AEs with my ipad which can see the speakers and play to them but only with pandora. When it comes to itunes (on the PC) it can see the speakers but will not air play to them period. So IOS devices are working with the airplay. Do you know of any work arounds? I have been able to stream to my IOS device then air play from there with quickio but its just not the best method.

I have the Airport Utility on my ipad and can see both the airport extreme and airport express. Is there any adjustments that can be made on the AE side?

You mentioned that your iPad can stream using Pandora; how about using the iOS Music app?

With your PC connected directly to the AirPort Express by Ethernet as you show in your network diagram, I am at a loss on why it is not able to stream to it. The AirPlay stream should go directly from the PC to the Express in this configuration bypassing the new Extreme all together.

If you have already disabled the Windows software firewall and enabled IPv6, I'm afraid I don't know of any other settings that would make any difference. Maybe someone else in the Communities, having had the same issue, may chime in with a solution for you.

Finally solved! When I PERMANENTLY disabled the windows firewall and rebooted everything finally works great! I can now control music for the entire house and boat dock from ANYWHERE from any of my IOS devices! THANKS
