I just noticed this... my son had a 17" 2.6 MBP that died, and we moved the HD to an older 2.4 unibody for him. Seems like ever since he has been able to connect iMessage. Works on his iPhone and iPad; but not the MBP.

I know you are in the UK; but what have you heard about Apple specialists doing this "Flash fix"? Do they charge to do this?

Thanks, good to have some idea of what could be going on.

    Hi,

Every post I have seen here reports that in an Apple Store they will do this "Flash" to "restore" the Serial Number.

In most cases it is Missing and it needs a specialist tool/app to do the "flashing".  It appears that there may be 3 versions of the app and you have to have the right one.

There are reports that the process can only be done once.

In most cases it is missing as th Logic Board (mother board) has been replaced due to repair or refurbishment.

If the computer reports the correct Serial Number in System Profiler/Information or via the About this Mac item in the Apple Icon Menu

(In Mountain Lion you need to click twice on the line that shows you the OS Version number (it changes to the Build number then the Serial Number)

Then you will need to remove the IDS: Your/His Apple ID-Auth Token item from the Keychain.

Open the Keychain Access App in Applications/Utilities

Have the Login item selected top left.

    Have Passwords selected lower left.

On the right look for the item that reads IDS: appleIDemail-Auth Token  (such as IDS: user@icloud.com-Auth Token)

Delete this item and restart Messages.

The item should be recreated and it should have polled the System for the correct Serial Number.

Basically at the moment your computer is trying to "Spoof" the old one and the servers know something is amiss.

Hi Ralph, he didn't have an "exact match" but found these:

My first thought is to remove the 4 IDS tokens....

    Hi,

Based on the dates of your I cannot see that is going to cause much, if any, harm.

Mine show much older dates.  (And of course the Apple ID one)

Well, there wasn't a direct "IDS: Your/His Apple ID-Auth Token" listed in his list. He removed the other ids listings, and restarted the Mac, and same thing. iMessage won't log in. He also removed the 2 iCloud devise identifiers. This didn't help either.

    Hi,

Does his computer list his Serial Number ?

In Mountain Lion you can use the About this Mac item in the Apple icon menu.

You then click twice on the line that tells you the current OS  (It changes to the Build number then the Serial Number).

In Yosemite the About this Mac panel displays the Serial Number.

He said it does not display a serial number...

What should we consider doing in that case?

    Hi,

He needs to take the computer to an Apple Store and have it flashed to the chip that holds it.

    It tends to be Free.

Any news about this issue? I spent a few days trying to figure this out. I tend to blame yahoo for the issue. It doesn't let me connect using other messaging tools like Messages. The only way it works is from the browser. Please help!

    Hi,

There is n news on this.

In El Capitan it seems to be the same.

Yahoo have not made a Mac version of their app since 2012.

The last one cannot be used in Yosemite or above.

The Messages option is based on a Plugin that was added to iChat 6 and appears to have had not changed.

The issue seems to be that the login is rejected soon after making contact with the server.

This may be because the sever now wants the Login to be SSL (It appears it is not).

My son lives a ways away from an apple store, so we haven't been by one yet. Will update here when we are able to go by.

The last few days, my iMessages stopped working suddenly. It's been a while since I downloaded the new update, IOSXElCapitan, so I didn't think that would have anything to do with it, but I am not very knowledgable on computers. Anyways, Every time I try to sign into my apple id on iTunes, it says "there was an error connecting to the apple id server", and whenever I try to sign into my apple id through iMessage, it says "there was an error during authentication". I know I have the right username/password because I have been using it for years and I haven't had a problem with it until now. I've tried all the restarting things, including the key Combination "Command+Option+P+R" on Reboot, and I have tried Force quitting the Imagen process, and then opening messages afterwards and trying to sign in. What else should I do? I am confused as to what I can do. I even tried signing out of icloud and my apple id on my phone, then signing back in, and it wouldn't work, and upon trying to restore my iPhone, it says there was "an unknown error preventing iTunes from connecting to the server". I've tried everything to try and resolve the problem.

    Hi,

Apple have two Operating Systems (OS things).

The iOS is for iPads, iPhones and some iPod Touches.

The Mac OS (Mostly referred to as OS X and some numbers as in 10.11.1) is for computers.

Start by going here https://appleid.apple.com/ and logging in and see if that fixes anything.

The iMessages server  and the iTunes server are different servers and it rare that you cannot login to both.

This normally means you have an issue with your Apple ID as a whole.

If you had 2 Step Verification in place you may need to reset it.
