My MBP 2010 with 16GB of Ram will not boot up.

Hi There,

I bought 16GB of Kingston Ram hoping to up grade my 2010 MBP 7.1, However when I installed the Ram it would not go past the Uni Body start up. I have tried a combination of 8Gb and 2Gb of ram and both sticks of ram work perfectly, at a speed of 1067Mhz. They computer works fine with 10GB of ram ( 2gb stock + 8gb kingston). However the computer will not run with the full 16Gb ram. The link below will take you to the ram i bought and the specifics.

Thanks for your help and replies, Will reply ASAP as Im in urgent rush to work this out.

Have you tried to switch the 8 GB models between the banks as well (not just test both on the same bank)? Do you hear beeps upon start up with both 8 GB modules installed? If so, describe.

See this information from everymac.com on your machine. 16 GB is not officially supported by Apple:

*Originally, both the official and actual maximum RAM was 8 GB. However, as confirmed by site sponsor OWC, if running OS X 10.7.5 or higher, updated with the latest EFI, and equipped with proper specification memory modules, this model can support up to 16 GB of RAM.

Additionally, I personally would not buy Kingston RAM (especially Value RAM) as there have been quite a few reports that it is not working here. As Macs are rather finicky about their RAM, I would only buy RAM from a reliable vendor with a lifetime warranty, specifically one of the two most recommended here: OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial.

OWC has tested it with 16 GB - see the notes here:

If I wanted to go beyond Apple's specs, the only place I'd feel comfortable buying from would be OWC since they'll guarantee it.

I'd return the RAM and purchase it from one of the two recommended vendors.

I have tried applying the ram to the different banks and the computer says the RAM is fine. It is running at the Same 1067Mhz as the original RAM. It is avertised to work as 1066MHz though. Not sure if this is the reason or has a difference with the RAM working. I am currently working with One 8GB and the orginal stock 2GB, Is this slower and worse off? Is there anything I could do to try and get the computer to start with the 16GB or RAM?

Let me echo the advice that babowa has offered.

Macs are notorious for being selective with RAM. OWC has bench tested 16 GB RAM that they sell in a MBP model 7.1. I know of no other vendor that has done that (though other RAM brands MAY work).

For guaranteed results in a model 7.1 MBP with 16 GB RAM, send your current RAM back and purchase OWC RAM. Otherwise, you will have to be satisfied with your current arrangement.

Ciao.

My MBP 2010 with 16GB of Ram will not boot up.
