Are you booting into your extant Recovery partition? Did you have Mountain Lion installed before you erased your hard drive? Are you requested to enter your Apple ID before the installation process begins?

I used disk utility to erase the disk. Then went to download the OS software. Yes mountain lion was on there before and no it doesn't prompt me to log into my apple id
try restarting holding down the command+option+R keys (this boots to internet recovery) and try to install the OS from there since it accesses apples servers directly in that mode.
what OS came w/ the mac originally? you may have to install that first and then reinstall the lion or mt lion that you have purchased.
After erasing the disk on my late 2011 Mac book pro it doesn't try to install lion OS X but instead tried to install mountain lion 10.8 and I get an error telling me that the installer information cannot be found for the machine. How do I fix this?
