In my early 2008 MacPro, can I install two 4GB memory modules next to two 2GB modules, or two 1GB modules?
Of course. It doesn't mind the size of the memory modules you install, always that you install 4 GB modules or less. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4433?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#4

Will the 4GB modules cause any problems with heat, incompatibility, etc.?
If it's Apple-approved RAM, you shouldn't have any problem. OWC and Crucial are reputable sources, so you shouldn't have any problem with it

Komputerbay 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR2 667MHz ECC FB-DIMM 240 PIN

Amazon has some of the best prices on FBDIMMs. 667MHz works fine, and using 8 DIMM slots improves performance of memory bandwidth, regardless. The 4% difference between 667 and 800 negligable. You might want to fill all the slots esp as 2x2GB are $30.
