ipad cannot access internet through airport express

After setting up Airport Express, I can only access the internet through the LAN port ethernet cable to my iMac. Also, my iPad cannot see the internet, even though it connects via wireless to the airport express. What settings have I got wrong. My ISP is a static IP with ethernet WAN cable to airport express. Thanks !

AirPort Express 802.11N (2nd generation), iOS 6.1.3

If you are getting a static public IP address from your ISP, you need to configure this for the AirPort Express via the AirPort Utility.

  • AirPort Utility > Select the Express > Edit > Internet tab > Connect Using: Static
  • Also be sure to enter all the other ISP-provided IP addresses for the other fields on this tab.
  • Once done entering, click on Update and allow the Express to restart.

This problem is not so simple. When I do as you suggest (put my ISP info in under the "Internet Tab"), I get an error msg: "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP Address (76.10.130.247". Then I cannot connect to the Internet with the iMac (or the iPad, of course). I've tried "DHCP", but same thing happens. The only other "device" is my ISP Ethernet-output Modem.

I've hard-factory-defaults-reset this AE box at least 8 times in the past 5 days, redefined the AE network, tried almost every option under the "Internet" and "Wireless" headings in Airport Utility (AU). Tried all of this through my iMac and through my iPad. In ALL cases, I have never been able to access the Internet via the iPad. In addition, as soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable from between the AE & the iMac, even though the wireless is connected between the AE & the iMac, I lose my connection to the Internet. As soon as I plug this ethernet cable back in, I get my internet connection again (but only on the iMac). I've even tried using different "Radio Mode" options under the AU "wireless advanced" settings.

I read many forum discussions that sound remotely like my problem, none of which helped.

Here's my ISP info, as used on my iMac in SystemPref-Network-Ethernet: Static IP=76.10.130.247; subnetmask=255.255.255.0; routeraddr=76.10.130.193; DNSserver=206.248.154.22,206.248.154.170;

this works fine, without the AE and with it via the ethernet cable, but NOT via wireless.

After setting up the AE, it gave me these settings:

Under "Internet" - ConnectUsing=Static(I tried DHCP); IPv4addr=10.0.120.251; subnetmask=255.255.255.0; router addr=10.0.12.1; DNSserver=192.249.4,192.249.5; Internet-Opts-configure IPv6=LinkLocalOnly;

Under "Wireless" - NetworkMode=Create; NetName=Tuna; Security=WPA2 Personal; Wireless-Opts-Country=Canada; Radio Mode= I tried them all; Channels=Auto

Under "Network" - RouterMode=OFF(bridge); I tried other, but no luck.

I've tried the "Guest Network" option and the "5GHz network Name" option - niether helped.

Any suggestions ? If not, I suspect a defective Airport Express. Thanks again !!

No idea. Strictly speaking, it is probably not a modem - it is a small cube about 1 inch on a side: 1 wire to 110V AC power adapter, one wire (marked "to Computer") which is an ethernet cable to my Airport, and 1 wire (marked "to Radio") which goes to my dish on the roof, which "talks" to a dish on a tower a few miles away and then to my ISP office. I suspect it is a digital (not analog) signal between them and me. In effect, I think I am an extension of their ethernet network. Sorry, I know this isn't much help.

Looks like you are getting Internet service via microwave. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with how exactly this is provided and you may want to ask your ISP if they support multiple devices being connected using a router with their service. They may also offer assistance on how to configure the AirPort properly.

Hopefully, someone else in the Communities who already use this type of service, can chime in to offer help.

In one of your previous posts you mentioned:

After setting up the AE, it gave me these settings:

Under "Internet" - ConnectUsing=Static(I tried DHCP); IPv4addr=10.0.120.251; subnetmask=255.255.255.0; router addr=10.0.12.1; DNSserver=192.249.4,192.249.5; Internet-Opts-configure IPv6=LinkLocalOnly;

With this information, the settings I would have expected to find in the AirPort Utility would be as follows:

  • Internet > Connection Using: Static
  • IPv4 Address: 76.10.XXX.XXX
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Router Address: 76.10.XXX.XXX
  • DNS Servers: 206.248.154.22 & 206.248.154.170

These would be the public IP addresses that your ISP is providing, not the private IP addresses that you show above. In turn, with NAT & DHCP enabled on the Express (its default mode) the Express would provide the required private IP addresses (the default is in the 1-0.0.x.x range) for network clients connected to it either by wire or wireless.

Salutations, Tesserax: Success at last ! What I did was:

- Reset the AE to factory defaults.

- unplug the ethernet cable between the AE and the iMac.

- power up iMac and start Airport Utility.

- setup network as normal - it showed default IP addr of 10.0.12.251, etc.

- No internet connection, as usual.

- editted AE "Internet" settings to my ISP IP of 76.10.130.247, etc, and changed "Network - Router Mode" to "DHCP and NAT".

- updated the AE - Internet now connected to both iMac and iPad !!!

The only odd thing now, is that if I plug in the ethernet cable between the AE LAN port and my iMac, my iMac internet connection is disconnected (with or without the iMac wireless turned ON). However, the iPad still has internet connection even when the iMac doesn't. Not a big deal, but the Doc I got with the AE states this LAN port to computer should work. The Setup Doc should state you shouldn't have your computer connected to the AE LAN port during setup. Maybe the LAN port is really only for printers and hard drives ?

Thanks again for all your help ! You earned your points !

If your goal is to have the iMac connected by Ethernet be sure to make Ethernet the top connection setting in System Preferences > Networks. In the image below, you can see that I have Wi-Fi at the top followed by Ethernet. You will want to move Ethernet to the top of the list on yours if it is not already there.
