sanity check: hotsync with palm does not launch isync?

hi,

I migrated from a Powerbook 12" running Panther to a Macbook using the migration utility. I had to reinstall Palm Desktop 4.2.1D and then set up iSync to "Enable Palm OS Synching".

Now, iSync is working fine with iCal (updates on my Tungsten E2 show up fine in iCal). I am not syncing the address book.

Previously, in Panther, when i start a hotsync from the Palm, once the Hotsync Manager hits the iSync conduit, it launches iSync, and the changes show up in the log (how many events added, etc).

Now, with Tiger, iSync no longer launches, and the iSync log does not indicate that any sync occurs.

Is this the "normal" behaviour??? right now, my isync only has .mac (not used) and the palm device, nothing else.

Please let me know! Otherwise everything is working fine, the hotsync runs smoothly and is working, but i need to know if isync is supposed to launch or not!

thanks...

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

What you describe is 'normal' behavior under iSync 2 and later, Mac OS X 10.4 and later and the Sync Services framework. Implementation of this framework effectively 'unbundled' one-button synchronization. iPods—for example—are now synchronized by iTunes, not by iSync. And, .Mac Sync controls synchronization with the .Mac servers, and is configured using the .Mac preference pane in the System Preferences application.

Here is a link that explains the underlying technology:

http://developer.apple.com/macosx/syncservices.html

In order for iSync to operate in conjunction with the HotSync Manager and push and pull data from your truth database to your Tungsten organizer, iSync must be running as a process—visible or hidden—when you initiate the event. You can trigger a synchronization involving a Palm device by…

• pressing the HotSync button on your cable or cradle [USB only]
• pressing the HotSync icon in the Palm OS application [Bluetooth or USB]

You cannot initiate an event using the Sync Devices button in the main window of iSync, the Sync Now option under the Sync Services icon in your menu bar, or the Sync Now button accessed using the Sync tab in the System Preferences .Mac pane.

You should launch iSync, open the Preferences… dialog and select all three of these options listed beneath the General heading:

Enable Syncing on this computer
Show HotSync reminder when syncing Palm OS devices
Show status in menu bar

This behavior will result: if iSync is active and you press the HotSync button on your cable or cradle or the HotSync icon on your Palm device, a dialog box will appear asking if you want to synchronize your Palm device. When you press the confirmation button, the process will continue and the logging function will work. iSync logs no activity if it is not running, and what little information it does log is so non-specific that it is useless as a diagnostic tool.

Because you have a Tungsten E2, you would benefit greatly by replacing the iSync and HotSync combination with the Missing Sync for Palm OS. More information about that application is available here:

Thanks for your quick reply!

Yes, now when I do a sync when iSync is running, it logs the sync. And yes, there is so little info that is it useless. I shall just do syncs from now on without iSync running.

Am tempted to purchase Missing Sync as I have heard lots of good things about it! In fact was tempted to when I was still using my previous PDA, a Sony Clie T615. However I weathered that and managed to survive using the plain 'ol Palm Desktop, iSync, and iPalmMemo (a little obscure memo pad syncing conduit and app, which I am still using today), so I think I'll stick with what I have now rather than purchase Missing Sync.

Thanks!

btw I upgraded from your same config. Still miss the 12" size, but loving the MacBook everyday!

ps. now to get my Nokia 6021 to co-operate with iSync and I'm all good...

I'm having the same problem, but this is a pain for me because I also have iSync set up to sync my S-E T68i phone along with my Palm m500. On my old Powerbook running 10.3, when I pressed the cradle's sync button, it would open iSync in addition to Palm's Hotsync and thus synchronise the phone too, all in one go.

Now, even if I have iSync open during the sync, the phone doesn't do anything.
