Can a Mac OSX Pages/Keynote document be opened on a Windows XP/7 PC?

I plan on getting the new iMac and iPod Touch in the near future, but I need to know if my teachers can open and view Pages and Keynote documents. Could they?

If your faculty are using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), then your most compatible solution would be to use Office for Mac 2011. Apple's iWork products (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) are not true MS Office clones, and you may experience unexpected, bi-directional compatibility issues.

Additionally, the native iWork file formats are not compatible with MS Office, but within the mentioned caveats, they can export files (.doc, xls, and ppt) that are reasonably shareable with MS Office.

{Personally, I use iWork exactly because it's not an Office clone. But I digress.}

I've swapped various documents with folks running Microsoft Office over the years including using the document revision-control support, and the import and export functions do work. You can import and export various Office-format files. If your Office documents use arcane or old or are complex, you might have issues, though.

Per Apple, iWork for iCloud is arriving this fall, which may provide you with an alternative approach for exchanging documents.
