Magsafe Power Adapter Alternatives? I already bought 3, I am not buying a FOURTH one

I have a Macbook pro 15" 2.4 ghz intel Core duo, 3 Years old. I travel a lot ok, but I find absolutely unacceptable that I have to change my Magsafe power adapter more than one a year because they just stop working: the junctions of the cables deteriorate very easily even if I take good care of them... basically every once in a while they just stop working.

I honestly got fed up and wanted to know if there a better, stronger and better done solution to replace this CHEAP piece of Apple technology. Thanks

MacBook Pro, iOS 6.1.4

There are some third-party adapters but the quality is usually horrible (yes, worse than Apple's).

I've seen (but Googled and cannot seem to find - perhaps someone else will jump in) a 'protective cover' for the Apple adapter that prevents, supposedly, some cable fraying.

Wait a minute... http://www.thefrayfix.com/.

Maybe it would help?

I have also had problems with magsafe cables fraying or shorting out near the "L" connection to the computer. After speaking with a Genius support staffer at a local Apple store he informed me that the magsafe cable has a design typical of a power/data cable (which it actually is) and not the design of a typical power cord. As such, it does not take a lot of abuse. Care must be taken not to bend the cable in any way while using it to charge the Macbook. Also, it must be carefully connected and disconnected by carefully pulling out the metal connector, and never pulling on the cable itself. It is best to keep the magsafe on a desktop and only connect and charge your computer while it is sitting on a desktop.

You can buy a 40 watt or 60 watt magsafe adaptor (sufficient for powering a 13" MacBook Pro) for around $20 at Amazon. You will need an 85 watt adaptor to power a 15" or 17" MacBook Pro and the adaptors cost around $83 from Apple, which I think includes tax. However, some Apple local Genius stores will give you a discount and sell you an 85 watt adaptor for around $61.

A protective shield that could be placed around the cable would be great if someone knows where one can be found.

So I'm having the same problem as thousands of others. Wanted to interject a thought, then ask a question. Here goes:

I read a possible deteriorant of the cable is the oil from your skin if you eat a lot of spicy foods which effects the body's overall pH level. Having said that, I SPECULATE another related cause would be the application of lotions and hand creams (most al of which are oil based). A helpful tip might be to ensure your hands are clean and dry before handling any area on the charger other than the plastic block. I've seen this on the charger for my MacbookPro, as well as my iPad and iPhones (yes multiple). What lead to this deduction is that my MacbookPro's charger started deteriorating and I mostly handle the cords (for all my devices) while getting ready for work after showering and applying body lotions and the like. When I wrapped my laptop's cord (at the charging point on the computer), it seemed fine for a while, but tonight it just quit. Thinking I should just change out the electrical tape wrapping, I found sticky hunky goo and a residue on the bare cable that was a pale green color (sea foam or light aqua color). It was a big mess and I'm sure toxic as well to some level. So there my addition to the thread, now the question I wanted to ask is:

Clearly I'll need to replace this nasty cord...no other way around it at this point. But the replacement apparently runs the equivalent of your first born child's.soul, a house in the Hampton's, and a pair of Donald J Pliner snakeskin boots!!! What's more is that this problem keeps perpetuating, I don't care who you are...this charger is like handling a thin glass Rolls Royce. It's GONNA need about annual replacing. It is what it is (hate that saying), so gulp it down and press on. Side note, I just love my MacbookPro and am excited about the Yosemite update on its way!!

So are there any alternative charger plugs for this computer class? Hopefully not some bootleg, "get a charger and Rolex here!!" deal from inside someone's long car coat, but a respectable brand that can at least replicate the plug-in point for the L-connection. Found chargers with the correct specifications that I'd be willing to take a chance on with a non-Genuine Apple product, but they just don't fit in my machine!!

So we've become THAT proprietary now have we?? I'm a die hard huge Apple supporter but Shame on you Apple. That's the same thing Samsung and Panasonic and many others are guilty of when there's no need to be. Your software and inside the computer...I get it...Apples with Apples, but a charger??.....Shame on you!!! Anyone else follow the movement to universalize all electronic brands?? Example home media sharing with Divx? No one seems to completely understand that entirely by the way ( very frustrating personal Internet research project). Media is pulled from device to player vs pushed to player (like AppleTV which always works best for me...provided I can CHARGE MY COMPUTER!!!!!!)

But anyway, about the oils in your skin...cumbersome (yet healthy) to wash your hands all the time, or unsightly having one of these cord covers. That idea sounds just silly to me. In that case why don't I just wrap my whole house in contact paper or cling wrap?? I shouldn't need a computer cord condom for normal daily use. Thank you, any feedback is appreciated.

I replaced the power adapters on both my MacBook 13 and MacBook Pro 15 with these 60 watt and 85 watt adapters and I have been impressed so far.

I had previously gotten replacement from Amazon that were in the $15-$20 but the quality of the cables and overall construction were far worse than the Apple adapters ... they basically lasted 2 months which was just long enough for the warranty to expire.

So far I'm happy with the ones above...They were about 1/2 the price of apple and have lasted over a year now and do not show signs of cable fraying. I would recommend them as they appear to be as good as the Apple brand and far better than the junk I ran across on eBay and Amazon.

-Cheers
