I can't send text to one person

I am having a problem sending texts to one person. I can recieve texts from them. I used to be able to send texts to this person. They do not have an Iphone. I went to Sprint and they were not able to figure out the problem. The contact was completed removed and added back in. I have tried to send a text in various ways:

replying directly to their text

sending new text using name from contact list

sending text using phone number- in various ways w/o area code etc.

Any ideas how to correct this?

Thank you,

Rebecca

They don't have a problem getting texts from anyone else except from me.

My reply to them is in a green bubble. Is that what you were referring to?

I can call the person by just going through contact list. I don't have to manually enter in the number.

I used to be able to send a text with out any problem.

This is the message I get no matter how I send the text, no matter how many digits I use.

Message sent using invalid number of digits. Please send using 10 digit number or valid short code. Msg 2114

It is the same message every single time.

Thanks,

Rebecca

Hold on Rebecca! One more thing hasn't been tried on YOUR phone:

1. Delete the message conversation with that person in Messages (all messages associated with that contact)

2. Delete the contact from your Contacts App

3. Add a new contact & put their correct information in

4. Try sending a new message to that person

See if that fixes it. (This would solve a minor OS issue that might be getting in the way)

Hi,

I was able to fix the problem. What finally worked was to delete all text messages to and from that contact. I also had to make sure I deleted texts to/from that contact which were included in any group texts. Then I deleted the particular contact from my phone. I added the contact again and the problem was solved.

I went into a Sprint store and the person working there did not know how to fix the problem. I found out how to fix the problem by looking through various forums.

I hope you can fix, or possibly already have fixed, this issues. It's weird how it can suddenly happen and with only one contact.

Good luck

Rebecca

Thanks Rebecca. As suggested by several folks, I have tried deleting all the text messages from that contact as well as deleting that particular contact from my contact list; I have also reset my network settings - nothing worked. I spent some time on the phone with a Rogers tech (my carrier); they determined that the message is not leaving my phone. Their suggestion, to determine whether the problem is with them or with my phone, is to put my SIM card in another phone and try to send a message to that contact. If the message doesn't send, that will mean the problem is on their end. If the messages does send, that will indicate that the problem is with the phone. I haven't had a chance to do this yet - I haven't found anyone with an old phone like mine, the 3gs, which has the larger SIM card - so I'll go to a Rogers store and try it there.

If that doesn't work, I have no idea what to do next. I'm kind of hoping it's a Rogers problem so they'll be responsible for fixing it...

I have no idea how this started happening. I researched this issue for hours in posts and forums that go back to 2009. It seems to be a problem exclusive to Sprint but not exclusive to Apple iPhones. The suggested solutions all looked weirdly silly to me but there were some common threads that seemed to suggest this: Change the contact information.

I altered the name by changing the middle initial to a full name and I added the area code to the phone number. (The phone is supposed to auto-detect and insert area codes but, heck, that obviously is not working 100% of the time.) Save the new contact.

Test text messages now go through to that number without returning the 2114 error message from Sprint.

I am just guessing but it seems that the registry in the phone was taking a shortcut and using the 7-digit number based on previous messages sent and received from a specific contact. When I changed the contact information, the contact listed in the phone's registry of numbers no longer matched the contact. So, again I am guessing, the phone used the fresh contact information.

While some of the multi-step dances others have suggested might work, my usual response to computer-based problems is to assume the machine is stupid and I always go for the simplest, most direct methods first. But it still took me many hours to arrive at the apparent solution I have used. I say "apparent" because all I know is the last few messages went through without returning an error from Sprint. That could change again at any second.

I am having a problem similar to Rebecca’s but unlike her error message “invalid number of digits” I simply get the “Not Delivered” message with a “Try Again” option.

The problem is with one person only, and it happened suddenly; we have been sending and receiving messages on a regular basis with no problems. I am able to send and receive messages from everyone else; I can receive a message from my friend, and he can send and receive from everyone else. The problem is with me sending a message to him (by replying, by starting a new message, or by sending from contacts).

I have tried all the suggestions above, i.e. logging out of my apple id account, clearing the message conversation, deleting the contact, then adding him back in (full number + area code).

We both have iPhones, mine is a 3gs, his is a 4s and we both use Rogers as a carrier; we use text messaging, not i-messaging and the message settings are set correctly (send as SMS).

Obviously, this is driving me nuts. Any further suggestions?

I would suggest after reading your description that there may be a bit of a glitch with your apple id login. I would first log out of your apple id. (going to itunes and app store and logging out there and then back in again.) If that does not correct it log in and out of your imessaging to see if re-activating your account will resolve the issue.

Good luck .
