Q: having trouble networking my G5 running 10.5 and my G4 running 10.2

I used to be able to connect my machines using my home router/network.  I recently updated my G5 from Tiger to Leopard.  When i was still running Tiger i had no problem connecting with my network.  My G5 still shows up on the G4 but as an allias, and nothing showes up the G5. I am not a networking guy by any means, but i even used to be able to connect to my wife's PC laptop! Am I maybe missing a setting that may have changed with the upgrade? Everything appears to be the same.

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

    Hi Tony,

On the G5, in Sharing pref pane, what all is enabled?

And in 10.5.x when you highlight say File Sharing, you'll see other thing need settong like who & what, that weren't there in Tiger/10.4.x

I have file sharing and printer sharing checked.  Yeah, i saw the other pannels for shared folders and users, i wasnt really sure how these worked, or what to do with them. And, i think  need to correct myself, my G4 is running Panther, i forgot which os number that was.

    Panther was 10.3 to 10.3.9

You need to add the Panther User to the list, then what you want Panther user to see.

ok, i have added all of the folders i would like to share in the Shared Folders column.  when you say add the panther user to the Users column, do you mean the name of the user account or the name of the computer? It is a very generic process, it is not asking me for an IP address just a name.

Then what do i need to do to get Leopard to see the other computers on my network, currently it doesn't see any of them?

The short username of the user.

What Sharing is enabled on he other computers?

In Finder's Go menu, click Connect to Server, then the browse button.

Ah ha!, ok some progress, the G4 is now able to connect to the G5 and i am able to access everything just fine.  Now, the only problem is the G5 still doesnt see anything on the network, not the G4 (even with the G4 connected) or the printer, when i go to the network tab in finder, it says it is empty.  I am wondering if i am just missing a setting somewhere.  When i was still running Tiger on this machine it connected fine, now that i have up graded to Leopard, i see nothing on my home network, yet the Internet works just fine.

    Good to hear some progress!

Is File Shating enabled on the G4?

Find the IP of the G4 in Sys Prefs>Network>TCP/IP tab on the G4, then on the G5...

Go menu>Connect to Servers..., type in afp://ip.of.another.computer, like...

    afp://10.0.1.5

    afp://192.168.1.3
