Q: Safari won't load certain pages on two different computers.  Chrome, too.  Told it can't connect to servers.  Tried a reset, didn't work.  Very frustrated. Please help.

I've never asked a question here before -- a total amateur.

Please post the links to the pages that won't load in your Reply.

It may be an issue with the website server.

There is only one page that won't load:  nytimes.com

It doesn't load on either of the computers in the house, and it doesn't load in Safari or Google Chrome.  This happened once before and I deleted the cookies and that cleared it up, but this time that has no effect.  The first time it happened, I had just started receiving internet through AT&T, but that connection was too slow, so I canceled it and got Time Warner, and then it happened again.  But it didn't happen as soon as I switched to TW; it happened almost a full week later.  During the first week, everything was fine.  This is my homepage, though I don't know if that matters.  I have tried resetting Safari, but it didn't help.  I have no idea what to do.  Any help is appreciated.  Thank you.

Are the computers sharing a Wi-Fi network?

If so, try restarting or resetting the router.

And check to see if the router has firewall. That may be preventing the browsers from loading webpages.

The computers share a network.  I tried restarting the router, but still no luck.  The router has a firewall, but as far as I can tell, it isn't set to interfere with anything.  It's set on Low and nothing else is checked.  Any other ideas?

I come back in an hour, but one thing you have to do right now: uninstall Mackeeper !!!

here is a guide how to do it:

    http://www.macexpertguide.com/2012/11/16/uninstall-mackeeper-2012-2011-mac/

Back again: now reading your post.....

Getting rid of Mackeeper is very important.

Then you have loaded a lot, that you probably don't need, and some of it is known to cause issues.

Start: remove (with the minus sign) from SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems tab:

    Akamai

    Restart computer, then:

    1. Problems:

    uninstall Akamai: creates problems.

    uninstall Hotspot Shield: idem.

    uninstall LittleSnitch: idem

    uninstall Superuser: idem.

    uninstall Huey Pro: idem.

    2. Maybe a problem with corrupt Sugarsync plist:

    in Applications/Utilities/Terminal    copy/paste following command:

    sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.sharpcast.xfsmond.plist

and enter, give your password when asked, then Quit Terminal.

If you do not absolutely need Sugarsync, uninstall Sugarsync after this Terminal command.

    3. You have installed a lot of Adobe drivers etc, do you need all that? and what for?

    4. When you do not absolutely need MagicPrefs, uninstall it.

After that restart, maybe even after each point.

When I say "uninstall", I mean uninstall as something more than just dragging the App to the Trash  Bin: most softwares have an uninstaller, use it.

I am having the exact same problem - started yesterday. I can access any website EXCEPT www.nytimes.com.

From the Terminal, I tried pinging www.nytimes.com - I get "cannot resolve www.nytimes.com: Unknown host."

My officemate, on the same network, using a PC, has it fine.

Again, this started happening yesterday while I was online - it worked until that point. I can access any other site by ping or in Safari. I've tried it both on wifi, and on ethernet.

    Any ideas appreciated!

    Update:

My officemate, on her PC, who CAN access www.nytimes.com, pinged the site and got the IP address. I put the IP address in Safari, and the site loads!

And 2 others working down the hall also CANNOT access www.nytimes.com - and they are both on Macs also.

Sounds like DNS isn't resolving since the ping fails, though only from Apple machines... ???

yes, i will follow your advice, though i am curious about a couple of things.

i use huey pro to adjust the color of the cinema display i sometimes connect to the mac, and it works great.  do i really need to uninstall it?

i use mackeeper periodically, though i also use onyx and ccleaner.  do i really have to uninstall it?

as i realized this morning, my issues with the ny times were caused by hackers attacking the site.  it works now.  so i guess i wasted a lot of time yesterday, but on the other hand, it's a learning experience.  i'd love to know why my iphone could access the site but my laptop couldn't.  do you know?

    thanks, again.
