MIDI files on the iPod

I have a whole bunch of MIDI files that I would like to have on my iPod. I have them loaded into iTunes, and they play there, but they don't show up on the iPod. I was just wondering how I can get the iPod to play it, and if not, if there is any way to convert MIDI files to something that is more iPod friendly like mp3.

Powermac G4, Mac OS X (10.3.9), Old iPod with the touch wheel and 4 separate touch buttons. 3rd gen i think.
