middle keys and number line on keyboard produce two characters

When I press the middle keys(asdf...) or the number line (1234...)on the keyboard of our MacBook it produces two characters - one number and one letter - instead of just the correct one. The characters produced on both lines are identical and look like this: a1s2d3f4g5h6j7k8l9 a1s2d3f4g5h6j7k8l9. Can anything be done? It is driving me nuts!

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4)

When I use the keyboard viewer, all the keys I press light up and the additional character lights up too. For instance, when I press "a", both "a" and "1" light up in tandem and are printed on the screen, similarly when I press the "1", both the "a" and the "1" again light up in tandem with the "a" first. It is that way through the number 9 and the letter L in the number line and the middle row of keys. I am thinking perhaps there is a short somewhere or a crossed connection.
