When trying to update my phone I realize that the line "Software Update" which is supposed to be found between "About" and "Usage" in the General menu simply isn't there. Is there some way to fix this problem or to go around and update to iOS 5 in some other way?

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

You won't have update over the air because you're not on IOS 5 yet.
To update you will need to connect your phone to your computer and open ittunes. Itunes should detect that your phone needs to be update. NOTE: you should backup your phone first and then do the update.
