How do I connect my phone number to imessages on my macbook

I can currently use my iMessage on my Macbook Pro but it uses my email. I have a friend that has hers set up to use her phone number but does not know how she set it up. When I go to accounts on iMessage it says add email but nothing about a phone number. Can anyone help me connect my number to this app on my computer?
