Q: MacBook Pro won't power up. No charger light

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" with 2.4Ghz i7 w/ OSX 10.8.4

I did an Apple software update today. It included updates to iTunes and i think a Thunderbolt update also. It requested a system restart so I went ahead and restarted it and left the room. When I came back in about 10 minutes later it was powered off. I tried to start it back up but it won't do anything. The light on the charger wasn't on either. I tried another socket and another charger and same thing. Before the update I had a full charge on the battery and the charger was lit up so I'm pretty sure its not an issue with the charger or battery. Tonight I looked at it again and noticed that the charger light is on its just very dim where you can berely see it.

Has anyone seen this issue before? I have seen a few other posts similar but none where everything just died all at once. My warranty is out so I'm trying to find a way to repair it myself if possible. I use this laptop to do alot of video editing so it gets pretty hot at times. Hopefully its not damaged beyond repair. I have alot of PC repair experience but I've never messed with a Mac other than upgrading RAM.

A:

I just got it back from repair. The sheet that they sent with it says they replaced:

- Board Logic 2.4Ghz (was just replaced a week ago on the first repair.

-MagSafe Board.

You can be sure that the problem isn't related to software, as it looks like the logic board has stopped working. Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

If it doesn't work, take your MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. If the MacBook is not in warranty, the repair will be expensive

Thanks for your quick response.

I probably should have mentioned this before but I just got it back from repair about a month ago. I had a problem with one of the USB ports not working sometimes. They replaced the logic board and both RAM sticks. I will try the SMC reset when I get home in the morning. I bought it refurbished from Apple and the warranty just ran out about 2 weeks ago so hopefully the SMC reset will do something.

I did try removing the battery connector today for about 10 minutes but that didn't have any affect.

All Macs have a 90-day warranty after a repair, so if your Mac is not working correctly, take it to the shop where it was repaired and it should be repaired for free

I wan't aware of that. I knew the 1-year warranty was up based on the date I bought it so I didn't even try to start a service request. I'll do that tomorrow.

Before you do anything, try using a completelty different charger. It is very weird that the charger light doesn't turn on because that light should turn on even if there is no battery in the MacBook and the logic board it fried.

And make sure the charger is a 85 watt charger which is for the MacBook Pro 15 inch. Chargers for the MacBook or MacBook Air have different wattages and won't work properly.

I tried the SMC reset and still nothing. I talked to Apple today and they said it IS covered so they are sending me another box so I can get it out for repair. I'll let you know what they find the issue to be.

I have a macbook pro 2011 version, when i used my mac today it suddenly stopped, the power toally disappered, charger wont light up either. I trid to turn it on but it won't do anything, no light on indicating any life in it.. I need help.

Mine was still within warranty so it was FREE. They overnighted me an empty box which was overnighted back to them. I think my original call to Apple was on a Monday and by Friday I had already shipped it to them and got it back repaired.
