Smart groups in iCloud but not on Mac

I'm not sure exactly how to word the subject, but here's what hapenned:

Upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I activated iCloud for that Mac aftwards

All seemed fine for a while until the first time I tried to send mail to Smart Groups that I had previously had set up from other address groups in Snow Leopard. That caused mail to crash repeatedly upon opening until I figured how to delete the outgoing message before it crashed.

Those Smart Groups no longer seem to be populated in my Contacts list. Neither do the groups under "On My Mac" in Contacts. They still appear but have no addresses within them.

Yet when I go to iCloud.com or select the groups within the iCloud section of Contacts, they do appear.

How do I get my Smart Groups repopu on my Mac?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Both Eric Root and Csound1 helped me with restoring the contacts into those "On My Mac" groups. I exported from the iCloud list and imported back into the "On My Mac" groups (creating new ones as needed.

I'm still having problems when I try to mail using the smart groups that draw from those groups. When I type in the To block the name of the smart group they apper in bold, but when I try to send they crash mail. Do I have to remove the name of the smart group from my previous recipents window to get them to grab the right address.

Well, none of these things worked for me. The problem seems to be in the Smart Groups themselves somehow. I have sent mail using the individual groups, but trying to create a smart group out of those same groups doesn't work. The Smart Group that is created doesn't reveal any of the individual addresses and when I try to send the message with that smart group it crashes mail.
