I want to save to the time capsule how do I set this up the first time. As an example, when I rip a cd and wish to store it in the time capsule but potentially outside of iTunes. Is that possible?

Yes, you just copy and paste. You might find it hard to use the TC as actual location where the rip happens though.
Outside of itunes just means you store the file.
Please note.. if you mix TM and data .. all the world of roses may suddenly be thorny.

And note there is no backup .. so if the TC dies.. one day they all do.. you still need a more reliable location if the file is significant to you.. TM cannot backup network drives.
A better option is to use an external disk and then TM can back it up to the TC.
