what happened before Wednesday, when Aperture stopped opening the library? Did you upgrade any software? Imported new image files? Moved your Aperture library to a different drive?

You are saying you are having a External 3GB drive by CORE by CNM - is that the drive with your Aperture library? How is the drive formatted? Has your library always been on this drive or did you move it recently to a different location?

I have around 10K images on drive but file size for library says 0bytes

Is that the file size you are seeing in the Finder, when you are selecting the Aperture Library in the Finder? Are you having more than one Aperture library, and could it be that Aperture is opening wrong library ?

Extetrnal drive is formatted with Tuxera NTFS and has worked on this for some time.

Is the library on this drive or only the originals?

an Aperture library needs to be on a drive formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled), see Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library

Previous Aperture versions did not check the file system however, so you could get away with storing your Aperture library on a drive with the wrong formatting, but you risked library corruption when doing so. But the recent Aperture version 3.4.5 will check the formatting of the drive occasionally and give an error message, when you try to use an Aperture library on a drive with the wrong formatting. Is your upgrade to Aperture 3.4.5 very recent?

Have the library on the local drive is much better, you still can have the pictures on a external drive. Performance will improve. The size of the library depends on the number of pictures and the quality of the previews that you specified. 11 or 12 will greatly fill up the drive and is most of the time not needed; you can't see it on the display, so go with 8 or 9.

To confirm, thatthe location on your external drive is causing the problem, try to create a new Aperture library on your external drive. aunch Aperture with the ⌥-key held down and select "Other/new", to create a new library, and try to create it on your external drive. WIll Aperture let you do it? Can you work with another library on that that drive?

Even if you can, I would not risk to store my Aperture library on such a drive.

The library is on the external drive as are all of the pictures.

Do you mean, the library is referenced, James? Then move the library to your internal drive, but leave the referenced originals on the external.

How big does the library file get.

The size of a referenced library will depend on your settings for the quality of the previews; with high quality previews it can get quite large, if each preview requires more than 1 MB. Also if you are syncing with iTunes, the iPod Photo Cache can get quite large.

Put everything on the local drive, if there is enough room. You can always later move the pictures to a new location i.e. external, and keep the library local.

I think I set it to keep the images in the library not referenced but the drive did contain many pictures before I started using Aperture so i need to bring them into the library.

How large is your library now, and how much space can you afford for your Aperture library on your internal drive?

Or do you have a second exernal drive, that you could format MacOS Extended (journaled) to be able to temporarily host your Aperture library?

Do you need the "Tuxera NTFS" formatting on your external drive to share image files with other systems, or would it be an option to reformat that drive?

If you are more comfortable with a managed ibrary, by all means keep the library managed. Only it needs to be on a drive formtated MacOS X Extended (Journaled). It could be your inernal drive, if you have enough space or a locally connected external drive. Connect it to the fastest port you have; Firewire, or Thnderbolt, a fast USB port.

Move the library there, then import the images, that you now have in separate folders on your externa drive. To prevent Aperture from importing duplicates, enable the option "Do not import Duplicates" in the import panel. If you are lucky, Aperture will recognize many of the duplicates. if you have not changed the filenames.

If that is in response to my asking if the library was also on this network drive then you have a problem.

Aperture libraries need to be on locally mounted OS Formatted drives. Anything else will cause unexpected results.

It ishould be ok to store the originals there as referenced files but the library needs to move.
