Text to Speech on Macbook Pro Kindle

I've tried to set up the text to speech on Mac Kindle and it's not working. Everytime I highlight the words I want to hear read aloud, the highlighted words are lost and my laptop fails to read the words. I've tried holding the command buttons down and it still doesn't work. I have updated everything to the latest version of Apple. Anyone got any ideas of what I might be doing wrong or how I can repair dictation.

Thanks

Angie

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Text to Speech

1. Put a checkmark in the box beside

"Speak selected text when the key is pressed

current key: Option + Esc"

2. Highlight the words and press option+esc keys.

You can change the keys if you want.

Best.
