Is there a way to keep music playing while using an app??

As the title suggests, I'm wondering if there is a way to keep the music playing on my iPhone 5 when I open an app that produces sound? The way it is now the music cuts out the second I open the app, even if I use the little "control center" you get when you double tap the homebutton, it cuts when I get back into the app. Is there a way to override this system, or will I have to keep choose between app and music. Any help will be appreciated!
