iMac 27 (Mid 2010) Memory Upgrade

I want to upgrade the memory on my Mid 2010 iMac 27. It currently has the standard 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3. My question is am I limited to only adding a 4 GB Kit (2 GBx2) for a total of 8 GB, or is it alright if I install a 8 GB Kit (4 GBx2) for a total of 12 GB?

MacBook, OS X Mountain Lion

You have four slots; right now only two are used (two 2-GB modules)

With I upgraded my 2010 iMAc 27, I added two 4-GB modules to the two open slots for a total of 12GB.

With the right modules, you can go to a total of 32GB RAM (four 8-GB modules). I got my iMac RAM here:

Thanks for the greenie! I think you'll be happy with either vendor. I did not see an eye-popping speed boost in Mac OS 10.6.8, although Activity Monitor shows the system has not wrtten any RAM content to disk since bumping to 12GB.

On the other hand, I have Win 7/64 Home Premium installed on the same comptuer via Boot Camp and Win 7 definitely benefited from the extra RAM.

You're very welcome! I'm running Parallels Desktop 7 VM, and it is slow. I'm hoping that the extra RAM will improve performance. Plus I have thousands of pictures in iPhoto, which can often take a awhile to load, so here again my hope is that the addition memory will make life a little easier.

Thanks again for helping! Enjoy the weekend!

Part of your problem is you used incompatible Ram that will make your computer do wierd things.

Go to let them scan your computer.

This is Other Woeld Computing and both are highly recommended by Mac users. Stay away from Bargin Basement Ram.
