Can't tell where the problem is coming from.

Hey there recently replaced my hard drive because I thought this was the reason I was having all these issues only to find out that in fact it must not have been. I really don't know if the problem is more technical or located somewhere else on the hardware, but the hard drive replacement went well and as planned, I doubled my space, yay.

Anyways I replaced hard drive -- transferred files from time machine backup to new hard drive via migration utility. All went very wonderfully. Only issue is I'm still having the same problem with my computer crashing whenever I attempt to utilize it for high CPU programs. No matter how hard I try I cannot read or make sense of the crash reports, this was really my last resort to post a wall of text, but here it goes.

This happens with multiple of my programs so I don't know where the source of my issues are, but would love to hear some good news for once. I am so very close to just transferring my iTunes library to a new account and starting fresh there.

Anyways CRASH REPORT:

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):          com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000          com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000          com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.

Good luck,

Clinton

Thank you for the advice my good sir it looked to me as if it were something to do with NVIDIA card as well but with my little knowledge of what these reports mean I wouldn't be able to tell. Is it possible to self-replace? And how much would it cost?

I am really sick of dealing with my local apple affiliate. They really have no idea what they are doing and are frankly rude and snobby.

Thanks a million friend 🙂

Also must say I only really did start having this problem once I went full Mountain Lion, I'm wondering if maybe I reinstall the OS if I could still have at least some functionality.

Aug 31, 2013 9:17 AM in response to clintonfrombirmingham

So I'm back... I went up to my local central apple store long day yesterday! Got my iPhone replaced, charger replaced, and now am finally back in the game.

Here we go!

We also went over the laptop... Now I will say the person who did help me was excellent, he understood that I understood the inner workings of the laptop and did not try to lamen-terms anything for me which was a real nice change of pace compared with the people who think just because I don't appear to be interested in computers am not.

At first he seemed very confident it was the hard drive, and so we went through the same doctor process that everyone does check to see if anything is failing -- all good there. As I already knew.

Now I was fairly confident that it was the logic board due to the crash report, and the news you had told me. I mean it wasn't the HD, so basically that leaves one of 2 other things... So I brought the crash report, and he even shifted his thoughts to the logic board I didn't mention this information until I let him try and figure out what was wrong. So we ran the display test, and -- all good there... Laptop is completely fine, apparently =/ End day @ apple store.

To be clear here: he determined replacing the logic board was not necessary.

Now normally this would be good news. But as I feared even with a completely reinstalled HD and when using a different HD I can't seem to avoid the problem. He said in kind of general terms when I asked him what may be the problem if this doesnt fix it? "Application issues" Hmm... not really sure what I can do about that.

Is there anything I can do to fix this problem I'm still having? Like verify disk permissions or something? I have absolutely no clue as to why this could still be happening.

Can't tell where the problem is coming from.
