My iPod won't sync with iTunes, shows in the source pane but can't highlight it

Given an older iPod and downloaded songs last year, now iTunes won't recognize it. It shows in the source pane giving me the option to transfer purchased songs but won't allow me to pick sync. iTunes is version 11.0 while iPod is version 1.3 but I don't know how to update the iPod if iTunes won't recognize it.

Dell Studio XPS 435T, Windows 7

If the iPod has not been synced to the Dell computer before, you will most likely have to transfer the purchases to the computer and restore the iPod.
