Keyboard Shortcut for Umlaut

Hi all,

hope this is the right forum discussion for this question.

I type on an English (qwerty) keyboard and 50% of the time in the German language. This means that for the Umlaut ¨ as used frequently above German vowels, it requires additional keystrokes, which I would like to minimize.

For example typing ä I must press option+u then a. Any tips on how I can cut out at least one step or more? I do this for the letters a,e,i,o,u and also option+s to get ß.

Obviously I don't want to lock the vowel keys to Umlaut as I frequently swap from English to German, in addition need to use normal vowels in German also.

Thanks in advance

So to the right of the discussion page (more like this), I found this little bit of info of holding down the vowel to access some key options to then press the corresponding numerical symbols:

Now I'm getting greedy;)

Any way to automate this so that if I hold down the vowel key, it would automatically insert the vowel with Umlaut, instead of giving me various options?

Thanks

Can probably be done, but not sure if worth the trouble:

Instead you could try the US International PC keyboard layout already on your Mac. To make an umlaut there you just type " then the vowel.

Tom,

thank you for that link. I gather for my purposes I would simply remove the unneeded letter options from the string of the letters in question?! i.e simply leave ä and delete the rest.

To claarify, I hope this will then not simply give me just one letter option to choose from i.e ä, where I still must press the only corresponding number (1 to get ä)? Ultimately the goal is to press-hold the vowel a for the ä to automatically appear, once the non used letters within the string are removed. Do you know if this is what would happen with this mod?

I've backed all up, printed the input methods current setting and will modify once I have taken a brave pill.

Yes. But I think you would still have to press the 1. I don't know of way to get an alternative character simply on the basis of how long the key is held down.

If you would like to program unused keys to directly produce your umlauted things, the app to make custom keyboard layouts is

(It's very easy to use)

Hi Tom,

if I am unable to achieve what I want, will have a look at key replacement

.

Wonder if you know why, as system admin, I cannot alter the file keyboard-en.plist (locked)

Get info reveals I can read/write to system within this file but instead get a pop up that I do not own it and don't have permission to write to it. Can however duplicate it and alter this copy. Not sure of the point of this as altering the duplicate achives little, seeing how the locked plist takes system precedence.

Any ideas on this permissions problem? Have repaired permissions without effect.

Cheers

For those like me, who have disabled the character accent input menu (see http://www.tekrevue.com/tip/how-to-disable-the-character-accent-menu-in-os-x-mou ntain-lion/) in favour of standard key-repeat via

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

press and hold won't work, because it just repeats the character like on any other normal system. Either reenable it or I recommend the tool KeyRemap4Macbook, which easily allows to remap with one tick the shortcuts Option+a=ä, Option+o=ö, Option+u=ü, Option+s=ß
