upon startup, my computer shows a flashing folder with a question mark. I'm not able to start it in start mode, and the only way it changes is if I hold the option key while it's starting up, but then I only end up with a cursor on a gray screen. I read that it is related to the startup disk, but I'm not sure what else I can do.

I've tried them various times.. safe boot, holding option, holding command-r.. nothing will work. I don't have my installation disk or anything. I'm also out of the country. Can I use a different startup disk if I can find one? or upgrade the software to help it?
You would need disks that are made for the same model as yours. The prime suspect is a failing or failed HDD.
Considering your geographical situation, are there any Apple stores or Authorized Apple Service Providers available? If so, take your MBP to one of them for a diagnosis.
