I have a hp deskjet 1056 printer. Is this compatible with the macbook pro?

Your printer is compatible. Open System Preferences > Print & Scan, connect the printer and turn it on, press the + button and follow the steps to add the printer. It will download the correct printer driver. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670
