Q: I don't have an iCloud button in my system preferences

I'm trying to upgrade my cloud storage because my free trial ends soon and I don't want to lose any data.  However, my MacBook Pro is like 4 years old and I don't have an iCloud button under my system preferences; just the old, defunct Mobile Me icon.  I have OS X 10.6.8 and my Mac works fine so I haven't seen a need to buy a newer model... How can I upgrade my cloud storage?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), I also have an iPhone 5 & iPad Mini
