Then after activating Match, all of those ALAC files were deleted and replaced by 256kpb versions from the iTunes store.
Not in your iTunes library it didn't. Nothing in your iTunes library is automatically replaced by matched files unless you specifically delete the tracks then download the matched tracks. If you mean on an iOS device, then, yes, this is expected behavior. When lossless files are processed they are either matched to 256 Kbps AAC files from the iTunes store, or, in the case of being uploaded, a temporary 256 Kbps AAC file is created to be uploaded. But nothing happens to the file that is in the iTunes library.

Nov 26, 2014 4:25 AM in response to Michael Allbrittonby Craig Pentecost,I've had a similar, but more extensive issue since I started using iTunes, dating back to 2005. My music files were renamed with all caps apparently random combinations of letters, such as "CXHML". BUT THEN, over the last two or three years, my entire library has been apparently eradicated from my hard drive, over several OS versions (always the latest version), several MacBook Pro's, and several different SSD/HDD upgrades in each laptop, with the latest loss being very sudden, and complete. 56,000 songs.
Yesterday, I planned to call in to AppleCare and ask about downloading everything on my AppleTV's iMatch to an ext HDD, but my subscription renewal hiccuped in my Paypal account, as it does frequently (causing the music, movies, etc. I own to be totally inaccessible), and now that I confirmed the payment info, my AppleTV is showing a drastically reduced subset of the content listed on it just two days ago.
I'd like to know what has happened, and have help retrieving the data. All of the Macbooks have been new, as well as the SSD drives installed. No other content has been lost or deleted. Only that which relates directly to iTunes and iTunes Match.
Please help, and with all due respect, let's not spend time exploring the various types of HDD failure. This has happened over multiple updates to iTunes and OSx.
