Having trouble getting new remote to work with my retina MacBook pro. Are remotes compatible with the laptop? Was trying to use with iTunes music

They should be compatable.
If the remote is from your Apple Tv, chances are it is paired with that apple Tv.
To unpair the remote:
On your apple Tv go to Settings->General->Remotes
click "Unpair Apple Remote"
That should be all it takes,

MacBook Pro with Retina Display does not possess an IR sensor, therefore the current Apple remote will never be compatible with it.
But for the record (i know this is an old thread), you can use the REMOTE app on your iPhone (if you have one) to control iTunes as an option. You can also use the iPhone to control Keynote as well (tho that's done in keynote).
