Q: Cannot backup my files / copy my files and folders due to error message " The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “.DS_Store” already exists. "

Hi Apple community!

I have a [rather worrying] problem.

When I try to copy all my files from my documents on my mac [or the entire documents folder] into an external drive, I get this error message

" The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “.DS_Store” already exists. "

I am not given an option to skip this file or anything else.

But I simply cannot complete the operation!

I have tried deleting a few of the .ds_store files, [both in the original and in the destinations]

but no success.

The same thing keeps happening.

At first, this was just happening when I was trying to backup to my dropbox folder [the one on my mac's harddrive, which gets synced to the cloud],

but then I tried to back up my documents to my external hard drive, and I realized it is giving me the same error message.

So effectively, it seems I cannot backup my files anywhere!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

    Cyber,

    What do you mean by

    • My fix was simply to create a dummy folder in the root of the "To" drive and copy my big folder to that.

Do you simply mean create another folder in the external drive? Meaning dont copy to the main external drive? Create a folder in the drive and copy the files to that?

    Thanks

Exactly. If I try to copy my "Pictures" folder to the top level of the external drive, it fails with the message above.

My simple workaround is to create a folder at the top level of the external drive (I call mine "Dummy Folder") and copy Pictures to that folder. That works fine, no problems.

When that's finished, I just drag Pictures up to the top level of the external drive, where I wanted it in the first place. That works, no error message.

It makes no sense to me that one way works and the other fails, but I've done it a number of times and the "dummy folder" trick does the job every time.

    Good luck!

I will try that.  Thanks for the quick reply too!!  It has been driving me crazy!  I have found so many bugs/glitchs with apple devices.  What kind of drive are you useing?  I just purchesed a WD My Passport Ultra 2TB.  I reformated it in Mac OS extened journaled before I started useing it too.

Thanks for your reply cyberchucker .

This does not work for me , as all the locations I am copying folders to are already at least about 2 folders deeper than the root on the external .

    So that's a bit of a bummer .

This problem STILL seems to be ongoing for many other users , in latest Mavericks !!

[my problem is on Mountain Lion , which I still use ] and on previous OSs.

... as evidenced by this other thread on the same problem

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4277022?tstart=0

Very , very disappointing [and extremely frustrating], apple .

    I can't work like this .

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I have this problem frequently too, and I have a workaround. Let's say I am trying to copy "Folder1" from drive A to drive B. When I try to copy it, I get the DS_Store error. What I do is create a new folder named "Folder1" on drive B in the same location where I want to copy the original. Then, I open the original folder and copy the contents to drive B. I.e, don't copy the folder itself, but select all the contents and drag them to the new folder with the same name.

This always works for me. It is similar to the solution discussed above, but avoids the problem you (Benway1) have with that solution.

Yes, it is stupid to have to do this, but it is simple and it works.

I believe the cause of the problem is the .DS_Store file, which is used to save non-default folder view information, gets corrupted. You can use apps like Tinker Tool or Cocktail to view the .DS_Store files and delete them if needed, but that seems to be more work than my workaround.

    Good luck.

as suggest by another user, compressing the folder allowed it to work. I compressed, transferred, unpacked and zero  issues

Thanks so much for your assistance David !!!

I missed your message previously, but it is appreciated presently.

I will try this method the next time I experience this issue again, which will probably be soon, as I have time to do a manual back-up.

My crazy "solution" sometimes :  backing up my mac files using a Windows virtual machine installed on my mac.

    For anybody who is interested in this : I use Windows on my mac [running through VMWare Fusion or Virtualbox] ;

running Paragon NTFS to HFS so that Mac and Windows files can be placed on the same drive .

This has the added benefit of giving multiple options of copying and cutting and pasting and merging files, which is way better than finder's way of doing this anyway.

It's insane that I have to resort to these measures for what should be basic operations.

    Cheers Eric.

I will try to forward this thread through the feedback form, since it appears to be an ongoing issue.

I remain on ML after having tried Yosemite, being unimpressed with no improvements in these regards, and finding other things I didn't like.
