iCal invites are not received by some people (I know why, but Apple won't fix it)

I switched to icloud a while back and have the maddening problem of SOME people not receiving invites, and have discovered what causes it (at least in my case):

If the user you are sending to has an itunes (or apple id) account with that email as the login (and that email is NOT an icloud email) they will never receive the iCal invite! Instead it gets routed to their (non setup) icloud account. If they start using icloud for their calendars with this same external email address as login, they will receive them there (directly on their calendar if it is setup). Apple refuses to forward it to their real email address, the one we are sending it to. I have reported it to Apple several times but they are not inclined to fix it, probably because they want to force external users to use icloud. This is mega frustrating. Many of my friends do not receive invites, forcing me to use Google calendar for events with those friends. I prefer the general interface and look of icloud/ical invites, but I need to be able to actually invite people!😠

Sadly this is still very much broken. I am considering migrating back to Google for Calendar since Apple refuses to respond. I have submitted a bugreport ticket to them in addition to this discussion, and even tried calling them. I can only assume this is done purposefuly to try to force people to use iCloud, and it is terrible and makes me really not want to use iCloud anymore at all.

Howdy you'l. Yeah I also have that issue with my iPhone iPad iCal invites. Obviously we all have to accept the Appel's arrogances and stubborness to listen to the customer. Google has spoiled us. Lol...

BUT!..... I think I have found an easy way for us.

  1. Create an event with all the information you wish also add all the invitees you want to invite, just pick their emails addresses from your contacts. No matter what their email address is ?????@icloud.com or any other @gmail.com or @hotmail.com. Then click DONE to save the event. Then:
  2. Then go to your Day iCalendar of the day of that event and select it. On your right screen side it will pop up that same event, go down to the invitees "not reply" and click or touch the arrow on the right, a new pop up window will open with all the names of the invitees. On the top right corner you will see an envelope "lMail" click on it and will open a new email with all the events information, the header as a subject and all the emails of the invitees in the To: section. Now all you have to do is Send it.
  3. ALl invitees they will receive a copy of that email and have the option to click on the date to transfer it as an event to their calendars.

Hopefully this was useful to you. Give it a try, good luck.

Not for me, but let me verify the following type scenario with you:

1. Your person to invite has a gmail address (something@gmail.com)

2. That gmail address is their Apple ID/iTunes login name (this is the most important piece)

3. They may have some icloud service on (like note syncing) but do not use icloud calendaring or mail (or may have signed up for mail but never check it)

4. Your icloud/ical invite arrives properly in their gmail inbox (at something@gmail.com)?

Is all the above true? For me, the above scenario results in no email being received at the address I sent it to (number 4), it gets routed/lost in icloud if that is their Apple ID login.

Like I said, I do not have the issue you have, all my invites are received regardless of the email provider and user ID's I just send to the correct address and that's it. Frankly if what you said was common the service would be useless, but it works for millions. The problem is at your end, not everybody's.

The login name is just a text string to iCloud, not an address.

Apple has finally fixed this issue! In iCloud Calendar online, select Preferences from the gear icon, then select the Advanced tab, scroll down to Invitations and select Receive event invitations as: Email to...

This is helpful thanks, but doesn't really solve the problem across the board. This solution requires every recipient current and future to go into their settings to do this. This is something that should happen automatically without any intervention necessary from the user. Still, it is better than nothing and I thank you for the info.

I fail to see how the problem could be at my end. As you say, an email address is (or should be) just an email address. It fails in exactly the way I decribe above, which is not random: People who have email addresses that are NOT icloud (gmail ones for example) but who ALSO use that address as their login ID for itunes and other apple services, do NOT receive invites at the address sent to. Period. Verifyable over and over again. With several people. People who are either completely on icloud (an icloud email address) or whose email address is NOT also their apple ID login get their invites no problem.

The problem isn't ME receiving invites. It is THEM. People who meet the above criteria don't necessarily use iCal or any part of iCloud, but their email address is their apple ID and they never receive the invites. I can hardly ask all these people to sign up for iCloud, nor should they have to.

Wow! Please tell me this isn't true. I just spent hours and hours analyzing and deciding to move my personal information to iCloud. I set up 8 calendars. I invite my husband to stuff all the time and his email is his iTunes email and he uses SOME iCloud but does NOT use it for his calendar. He's on an exchange server for that. This would just be awful if you are right.

OMG. You are right. I just tested it with my husband and he 1) did not get the email invitation 2) it did not populate on his calendar. The invite went to never never land. This is INCREDIBLY irresponsible of Apple and if they don't fix this, it is pure negligence in my opinion. Not only is it manipulative but they will be messing with millions of people's lives because HOW in the world will people figure this out? I can't believe you figured it out. I never would have known what was happening had I not read this chain. I was looking to find out why the invites go right to calendars which is totally annoying instead of arriving as an email that you choose to add or not. I found your post instead. I would have probably spent a month trying to find out why my husband never got my invites and I would have been pulling out my hair. The sheer void that they are creating of missed information is astounding. I don't see how I can use iCloud for my calendar b/c when will I know if a colleague or a friend is set up this way? I've spent the past 5 days setting up 8 new calendars and re-arranging my life around iCloud. I want to cry. Apple - please fix this and reply to this post as soon as you can. This is truly, truly negligent.
