When I send an email from the iphone or the ipad it appears in the sent mail box of both BUT it doesn't appear sent in the mailbox on the Imac. When I send an email from the Imac it only appears in the imac sent box...is this correct? I was expecting it to sync across all devices.

It'll sync if you've used IMAP or Exchange, not if you've set it up as a POP account. If you've set it up as POP on the iMac, you might want to save your sent mail to a local mailbox before you delete the account and add it back as IMAP.

I'm using IMAP on the Imac and SMTP on the the ipad/phone.
imap, pop3 and exchange are protocols for recieving mail
smtp and exchange er protocols for sending mails
unless one use exchange then one use smtp to send mails no matter if one use imap or pop3
Sorry, I don't really understand. Are you saying it doesn't actually matter and it should work?
