problem with my MacBook Pro

does anyone know why my MacBook Pro would be flashing a picture of a file folder with a question mark in the middle of it? Turned it on this morning and this is what is happening. Cannot get the computer to do anything!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
