Unsupported Printer (Samsung ML-1710, ML-1430)

How do I get my printers to work on my MacBook? I have a Samsung ML-1710 and Samsung ML-1430. Samsung doesn't have drivers for the intel macs.

Would gimp-print or guten-print do the job? I'm not sure if they're universal binary yet.

MacBook 2Ghz, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You can find an open source printer driver for both by going here and looking up each printer Printer Database, then read the notes and download the driver and install it.

It looks like you also need to download the Samsung Drivers package(which doesn't include the drivers for your printer), because it has other things in it which the drivers depend on to work properly.

Do that, follow the directions and with any luck you should be able to use those two printers. Printer drivers are not executable code, they're just ASCII text commands, so they aren't PPC or Intel-specific.

Hope this helps,

Yes, I'd download the GhostScript first, then the driver package, then your specific drivers. Since I don't have an Intel-based Mac, I can't test it, but I'm under the impression that PPC apps will run in Rosetta. So, these installers are PPC, but they should still work under Rosetta. Try it and see; worst case is that you'd get an error message about it not working and have to delete it.

I have a Samsung ML-1430. You can try using the Brother HL-1430 driver; I think they're the same printer, just labeled under different brands.

I actually grabbed Samsung's ML-1430 driver from their Australia site before it was removed, so I install and use that driver. However, I'm not sure how the driver would work with an Intel Mac. Please let me know if you can't get the Brother or generic drivers to work - I can get the Samsung driver installer to you somehow so you can try it.

Just in case anyone is reading...I followed the instructions on this thread to connect my samsung ML-1210 to my new mac mini (intel based). Installed the ghostscript interpreter first (ghostscript 7.05.5), then the samsung-gdi-footmatic-1.0.ppc.dmg, then the samsung-ML-1210-gdi.ppd.
At first it seemed to work, but then when I send a job to print, the samsung-1210 printer window says it's starting the job and then stops immediately.

It used to work fine with my powerbook G4 (was stolen this WE, hence the need to reinstall everything). I can't remember how I installed the driver on the powerbook (it seemed less complicated).
Did I get something wrong in the files I downloaded?

Your help would be much appreciated...All this stuff is way beyond my understanding...

Latest addition: I get a message in the printer dialog window saying (after "starting" to print the job): "the process 'cupsomatic' stopped unexpectedly with status 2".

If this means anything to anybody, please let me know...Meanwhile I did reinstall everything (ghostscript etc) just in case I got something wrong, but still same problem

I reinstalled OS X and had to setup my Samsung ML-1710 again. This is what I did to get it working:

1. Install Ghostscript (espgs-7.05.5-0.ppc.dmg)
2. Install the Samsung GDI drivers (samsung-gdi-foomatic-1.0.ppc.dmg)
3. Added a printer in the System Preferences

That was it. It didn't have the drivers for my 1710 but I used the 1210 drivers and it worked.

Hope it works for you.
