Q: Crashing iMac

Hello,

 

I'm hoping to get a little assitance with my desktop.  I rely pretty heavily on this machine for work, unfortuntately it  crashes several times a day on me.  Sometimes it's just the progam I'm running that crashes, sometimes the entire mac crashes.  It's almost 2 years old and I'm running Lion 10.7.5.  It has 12 gigs of ram. 

 

At any one time, I usually have only about 3 or 4 programs running at the same time: firefox, open office and lightroom 4.  It seems that lightroom is the thing that really bogs the machine down before a crash.  Particularly while exporting.  Though sometimes something simple as streaming Pandora will cause the crash. 

 

I installed Free Memory and try to free up my memory a few times a day. This typically opens up about 10 gigs, though this seems to be only a band-aid approach.  I feel there is something causing either the free memory to be used.  Or perhaps something else? 

 

I've read through many forums trying to find the answer.  I've tried various reboot rechniques.  Nothing seems to work.  If I copy a crash report to a posting, is there a chance to figure out what is going on here?

    No guarantee this is the problem, but Sophos Anti-Virus does seem to cause problems for some users.

    Uninstall it using the Sophos uninstaller that should be the Applications folder (you don't really need AV software installed if you keep your Mac up-to-date).

    Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable that item that Paul_31 cited. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by  Rember.  See

    This thread had a similar iMac with the same aftermarket memory.
