CPU process over 100% usage

On my mountain Lion 10.8.4 version the CPU utilization as reported by "activity monitor" showed a result greater than 100%. The TOR Browser went up to 100.9 % CPU with still further applications running. I have enclosed a screen shot of the exceeding utilization below

This is a serious concern because this may mean a hidden process not being properly reported.User uploaded file.

Can anyone give a reason for this error?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hey, I can understand your dilemma about the processor usage but Mac OS counts each thread as 100% CPU. So technically if you have quad core i7 processor with 8 threads so you will have 800% CPU. As FatMac>MacPro commented above that he has 6 core CPU and one of his process went upto 1150% CPU so since he has 6 cores and 12 threads so his processor has total 1200% CPU. I hope you understand the reason for your over 100% CPU usage.

It's not hidden. The problem is the Tor browser. Select it then click on the Quit icon and then on the Force Quit button.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

It's not an error. If you have multiple cores in the CPU, each core can account for up to 100%. If each core is capable of supporting multiple threads, each thread can account for 100%. For example, my single CPU 2010 Mac Pro 3.33 GHz has six cores. Each core can use two threads. So, some image processing software can (and has) accounted for up to 1,150% CPU usage, with other processes using up the rest. That's one reason it can get pretty hot.

This problem which occurred on my MacBook Pro is not a problem with TOR since the Operating system should not allocate anymore than 100% CPU to any process.

The OS can, should and will assign as much processing power as needed, if it requires all cores at full capacity it will assign that (if available) otherwise it will assign all that is available.
