The 3 MacBook Airs I have all have the incase Perf hardshell. Twice they have saved two of my Airs from what would have been "serious" cosmetic damage, and possibly worse. I dropped one of my Airs, and the top section took all the damage. Another time, my 11" Air (now my wife's) slid off a coffee table onto a ceramic tile floor. The corner cracked on the case, but the Air was fine. In both cases, bare units would have sustained dented corners, at the very least.

A few months back, when the first one I mentioned of those incidents wrecked the hard shell, I was disappointed to find that inCase had discontinued the Perforated series, and only had the "ugly" hammered type. For a month I went "bare", and found that my computer felt awfully unprotected, and far more slick to hold onto when in my lap, or carrying. The perf case really adds some welcome friction to carrying and grabbing.

I eventually found one on eBay (13"). 11" ones are much easier to find. I really like these covers, and they really protect the computer not just from drops, but the finish is kept perfect too. Not to mention, the carry grip is far superior to a bare one.

One caveat. Don't try removing the cover once on. You will be very lucky if you don't break a tab removing the top cover. Do it twice, and it will very likely happen.

p.s. They do add some asthetic appeal, but that has very little to do with my choice and reason for using it. If I nead another, for my next Air, I am not quite sure which I will pick. I do like that the perforations let out the dust and dirt, so it doesn't become a trapped abrasive. Another consideration is that if you use a carry case, some Air bags/cases are too tight to accomodate the shell. You best use a MacBook Pro carry bag/case.
