Error -2048 The File is not a movie

Hello all,

I've tried to download a movie (it's an episode of Photoshop TV to be precise)...and it downloads apparently fine.

When I try to open it or view it I get

Error -2048: The File is not a movie.

Huh?? If it's not a movie, then what is it?

I currently have Quicktime Player 7.1

What am I doing wrong or what can I do to fix it?

Thanks very much ๐Ÿ™‚

Photoshop TV is a Flash movie and requires Flash Player 8. QuickTime can play older Flash movies but not the newest format, so if QT is set to handle Flash movies, you'll get an error. Go to the QuickTime Control Panel, click on the File Types tab, expand the Miscellaneous catagory, and if Flash media is selected, uncheck it. Confirm that you have Flash 8 Player installed, restart your browser and try your Photoshop TV again.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dave,

Thanks so much for answering! ๐Ÿ™‚

Okay, I looked and "Flash Media" was NOT checked, so I'm okay there.

However, I don't believe I have Flash Player 8 in my computer. I'll have to find it and download it I guess. ๐Ÿ™‚ (I did a search for "Flash Player 8" and nothing came up). ๐Ÿ™‚

So, just for clarification, I need Flash Player, even though this is a file I'm DOWNLOADING (not merely watching it on the web page)?

I ask this because on the page where I can download episodes, it says all I need is Quicktime Player. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

Thanks again!

I can't tell since it appears that the downloadable episodes aren't free. You may need to contact the producers of the videos and ask them.

Hi Dave,

Well, I can't thank you enough... I really appreciate your help with this! ๐Ÿ™‚

I downloaded the Flash player just fine... but still doesn't seem to work. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

It's strange... when I highlight the file I have downloaded, it does say "Quicktime Movie" but then I get the error saying this is "not a movie"...

Can there be any other explanation you could think of? In the meantime, I'll check with the site.

Again, I appreciate your help!

Hi Jacumba,

Well, unfortunately, the site is a "members only" (It's part of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) and so I don't think you'd be able to attempt it. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

I do have more than one HD but I'm saving it to a folder in "My Documents". Should I attempt to save it to the Desktop? Would that make a difference, do you think?

Hi,

I took a look at http://www.photoshoptv.com/ and was able to view episode 35 with Flash 8 (streaming), and download the .MP4 file.

First the Flash 8 issue. I have the Flash 8 plugin installed & was able to view the episode in Safari, Mozilla & Firefox. What Browser are you using? After installing Flash 8, did you restart your browser (sometimes you have to).

The .MP4 file that I downloaded uses h.264 compression for the video and AAC for the audio, so you should probably make sure you are using Quicktime 7.0 or higher to view it. (it took a while to download, btw... the file was about 100MB - so make sure you got the whole thing.)

The other option is on the Flash 8 streaming page. It says that you can use iTunes 5 or higher and subscribe to the podcast:

"If the above link doesnโ€™t work and you already have iTunes installed you can subscribe by clicking on the advanced menu option at the top of your iTunes player and select โ€œSubscribe to Podcastโ€ - in the window that appears type or paste the following address: http://feeds.feedburner.com/photoshoptv/ - You can also subscribe by browsing to the music store and searching for โ€œPhotoshop TVโ€ in the podcast directory search."

Hope this helps

Hi Kurt,

Thanks so much for helping me and going the extra mile. ๐Ÿ™‚

I can VIEW the web-based episodes just fine... but with my membership, I'm able to download the episodes as Quicktime files (movies)...

When I go to VIEW the downloaded files is when I get the notorious 2048 error. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

I guess I just wanted to be able to save them to my HD to view them at my leisure since that's a bonus for paying the annual membership. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks again! Sorry I'm being such a pest! ๐Ÿ™‚

Try to open the movie with another player such as VLC Media Player. If it will play there, you're probably good to go. If you're then interested in exploring the problem further, you can in VLC's information windows take a look at the codecs used and post that information here and perhaps we can figure out what might be missing from QuickTime.

Dave, you're awesome! That VLC Media Player is allowing me to watch the episode. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks so much to you (and to everybody else who helped!).

Okay... so as to explore further, how do I look at the codecs (not sure what those are! LOL but that's another issue) so I can post them here and maybe see why I can't watch the episode in QT?

Again, thanks to everybody who helped! ๐Ÿ™‚

Open the movie in VLC and go to the Info menu command under the Window menu. In the Properties window that will open, expand the items (click on the triangles), and the codec information will be next to the "codec" label.

BTW, "codec" is short for "compressor/decompressor" and refers to the software use to reduce the file size and bit rate of the video and audio. Uncompressed video, in particular, has a lot of data, far too much to be transferred via Internet in most cases (and via DVD, even, for feature-length movies), so some form of compression is required. There are many different compressors, so any playback software must contain the equivalent decompressor to be able to play a given movie.

Cheers.

Hi Dave!

Okay, thanks for the explanation. ๐Ÿ™‚

However, I don't see a "Windows" Menu in the VLC player. I see the following:

File, View, Settings, Audio, Video, Navigation, Help.

None of which have an "Info" setting.

I do see a Preferences...which shows SOME codecs (Audio, Video, Other)... not sure if that is what you're talking about? ๐Ÿ™‚

Let me know what info you may need/want. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks again!
Ted
