I've got a couple dozen MO disks and a player that only connects to a Mac with a SCSI port.
I've just recently decided that I need to access some of these files, and I no longer have a Mac with this port.
I'm currently working in Chicago. If anyone has any suggestions about where I can rent/borrow a Mac for an hour to pull these files off to another media, I'd appreciate it.
The Adaptec AVA-2906 is both Mac and PC-compatible, and because of this, it's driver-based and not bootable. For the O.P.'s intended use, bootability shouldn't be a requirement. I have a couple of those cards in my B&W G3s, and the external port is a DB-25 - which is compatible with most older SCSI peripherals. One point that hasn't been established is whether or not the O.P. currently owns any Mac. If he does have an older Mac with PCI slots, the AHA-2906 can be purchased for very little at eBay.
I had looked up that card and the earlier 29160 on the Adaptec site and they show nothing about Mac support.
Think it will work??
I doubt that it works on Mac. I think it requires driver which Mac doesn't have.

The last Mac that had a buit-in SCSI port was the Beige G3, discontinued in early 1999. However a lot were built and they still show up in working condition on the used market for pocket change. If you decide to spend $10 on one, go for the mini-tower--not the All-in-One or the "desktop" (flat case) model. The tower is much easier to service it it needs some rehab. I have two of these but Chicago is long way from teh wilds of Idaho!
If you buy a Beige G3: the internal backup battery, or PRAM" battery, is likely DOA. The Biege G3 can get very cantankerous if the PRAM battery is dead or weak. My advice--buy the new PRAM battery when you buy/borrow the computer. 1/2AA 3.6V lithium--$5 or less online; probably over $20 at Radio Shack where their part number is 23-026
There were PCI adaptor cards that gave SCSI support to later Mac models that lacked the built-in SCSI port. However, they are now hard to find.
You can still find pci slot SCSI cards on eBay. For example:

But you will also need a scsi cable with the appropriate connectors.

You can use SCSI to USB converter. It's a little bit expensive, though.....
