Sep 1, 2013 5:46 AM in response to niknejaby Carolyn Samit,Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced then select the Proxies tab.
Deselect any checked boxes on the left then click OK.
See if you can connect to the iTunes or Mac App Store.
If it's not a proxies issue, open System Preferences > Sharing
Make sure the Fireall is turned OFF.
Or System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall
If it's turned on, you may need to click the lock icon to turn it off.

Thanks for your help.
None of the proxies were checked, and when i turned off the firewall it didn't make a difference
