Q: HELP with Apple TV & Airplay

I have Apple TV (3rd gen) and am having trouble with the Airplay feature. I have OS X Mountain Lion which I was hoping would help the problem but appears to have made no difference. When I try to watch a movie using airplay mirroring from my mac, the movie will just stop playing and I will be re-directed to the Apple TV home screen. I try again, and it still doesnt work. There is never any interruption in my internet so that can't be the reason. Airplay is also not turned off on my mac, it just seems to stop playing on Apple TV. I am watching the movies directly from my iTunes library.   Does anyone know how to solve this problem? We just purchased Apple TV and have been happy with it so far, BUT this issue we are now facing with Airplay (Especially after paying an add'l $20 for Mountain Lion) we are feeling frustrated and like we wasted our money!!! Any help is greatly appreciated.

You don't need to use mirroring to view a movie via iTunes. You can either use home sharing or basic airplay (within iTunes).

If it persists then it could be a network issue. Most common cause is interference, which can be verified by going to istumbler.net

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
