Very often, when I click to to perform any operation in any program, all open document pages will shrink, float to the top of the screen, don't respond to commands. the background turns dark blue. a click brings it all back, but it repeats, over and over. Starts and stops with no reason I can discern. Why does this happen? How can I stop it?

What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?

How full is your Mac's hard drive?

How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?

Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.

Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of "crapware" like so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?

There is the possibility, also, that your hard drive is failing. You should make a backup of all your important data as soon as possible.

It sounds like you're activating Exposé.

I do have MadKeeper on my machine and have decided to uninstall it.  However I saw that there was a very long procedure, and with several imminent deadlines, I have to put it off till those are taken care of.  When I have it completely off my machine, I'll see how my computer works and let you know.

    Thank you very much.

Yes, I did look and read about Expose.  It seems somewhat different than the problem I worote about.  I looked for it, found it in my Utilities folder, it did not show the dot indicates the program is open, but I have this problem all afternoon.  t comes and goes, unpredictably to me, except if click very slowly and carefully, I have a better chance of the problem stopping.  but of course, that slows me up.

As I told another responder who thought MacKeeper might be responsible, I plan to uninstall him as soon as I can.

Thank you for your interest and help.

It's not clear whether you tested Exposé. If you did, was it different from what you describe in your first message?

I should add that, while you should get rid of MacKeeper, it certainly has nothing to do with the subject of this discussion.

My problem kept occurring to an infuriating degree so I looked at Expose again and began to think that it might well have been involved.  Poking aroud further, in a sequence I could not reconstruct, I found a diagram of my Mighty Mac mouse which gave me the opportunity to shut off expose from the mouse's tiny rotating ball.  Since then, the probleme has not occurred, even with a full day's work yesterday, so I consider it solved.

And I thank you very much

I don't think this will limit me in any way.  I use the mouse ball for scrolling and still can.  To find an item on a cluttered desktop, I've always used F3.

    Again, Thank you
