I have a 500GB hard drive with only 96GB of space remaining. How can I free up additional space? I have already deleted videos, pictures and podcasts and then emptied the trash and I still have not freed up any space. Can anyone help me on this? Thank you.

Curious that removing those files haven't freed up any space.
That said, you need to find out what's taking up the space. Software like "Grand Perspective" or "DaisyDisk" can help. You can Google search for them.

Select the icon of your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you renamed it) in the sidebar of a Finder window, and open the Info window. How much space is Available? Specify gigabytes (GB) or megabytes (MB).
Thank you, Linc. I know how much space I have left. What I am trying to do is free up more space and wondering if I can do this without erasing the whole hard drive and also what this will do to what is on my Time Capsule. Omnigroup.com and one of William's suggestions may help. I haven't tried them yet.
The point of my question is that available space as shown in the Info window inclludes space occupied by local snapshots:

It will increase when you delete files. The free space shown in the Storage display doesn't include local snapshots and won't increase immediately when you delete files.
