Is ipad Bluetooth 4.0 technology compatible with Brookstone Bluetooth v3.0 keyboard?

I have an ipad 3 with Bluetooth 4.0 technology and a Brookstone Bluetooth v3.0 keyboard. I have been able to pair the devices but I can not type letters or numbers on the ipad. However, the top function row works (home key, change brightness, change volume, etc. It is important to note that the keyboard is fully functionl on my iPhone 5 so I'm wondering if I need to do a software update to either my keyboard or ipad. Anyone else have this issue and/or know how to fix it?
