I just got an iMac and I wanted to put some of my apps on it. Is it possible to have the same apps on the iMac and the iPad working with one another? For instance can I place the same game on each and will they update on the other one?

The iPad and iMac use different operating systems (iOS and OS X), and apps designed for one cannot be downloaded on another.
It depends on the game. None of the iOS applications will themselves run on the Mac, but they may be capable of exchanging data with the Mac OS X versions.
