Why is wifi sync so unreliable, iTunes detects both my iOS devices but it can NEVER reliabliy start syncing over wifi. Every since piece of equipment from my MacBook Pro to my Airport Extreme is ALL APPLE...

Like the title says wifi sync between my MacBook Pro running the latest version of Mountian Lion and my iOS devices (iPhone 5 and iPad Mini) is extremely unreliable. All of my equiptment is Apple from the laptop to my devices to the router connecting them all, iTunes see the devices and I can edit settings but when it comes time to syncing the settings or even the content it's always a crap shoot.
