How do I get rid of the annotation box?

I have a number of PDF files in which I have highlighted portions of text using a work computer (Dell, not MAC). I transferred these files onto my home MacbookPro and each highlighted portion now has an annotation box associated with it. I don't want these annotation boxes, how do I get rid of them?

If you can still select the annotation box in Preview, you may be able to change the color of the annotation box lines to the background color -- effectively making it vanish. In Preview, the Tools > Annotate menu will get you started.

If Preview cannot do the job, the latest Adobe Reader has robust annotation tools available from the Comment button on the right toolbar. Of course, installing Reader also installs additional PDF browser plug-ins that override the default Apple PDF plug-in in Safari. In my opinion, this is acceptible for the added functionality.

Can you click and select the annotation box? If you can, then click on the colors selector box on the Preview Edit sub-toolbar, and choose the Other color category. This will pop up the system color tool. Mine has a small black loop that you can pass over the background adjacent to your annotation box. Click on the background color you want your annotation outline color changed too. This will update the Other color in the Preview colors selector menu. With the Annotation box still selected, you can now click on the Other color and the box line color will change. You can also use the Opacity slider in the system color tool to make the Other color transparent.
