No speaker/earphone sound with iPad 3rd gen

I get no sound out of my iPad 3rd generation. This includes using my earphone jack. I have gone through all the troubleshooting I have found and can't seem to get anywhere. My iPad has not gotten wet and my side switch is set correctly. Also, occasionally I will use my iPad for a while and then put it down. When I go to use it again I can't get it to turn. The battery is not dead, but it shuts down and won't turn back on for a while. Takes up to an hour for me to get it to start back up. I'm out of warranty, any help?
